Rob · Head of Engineering

Hi 👋. I'm Rob, and I've been playing with (programming) computers since 1997-ish, when my parents bought our first proper computer - an IBM 386. I wasn't allowed near the hardware in case I broke something expensive, so I learned to bend the software to my will instead.

Twenty-odd years later, that hobby turned into a career. I've climbed the usual ladder - learning new stacks, mentoring others, eventually ending up running a small engineering team that builds and ships real things.

These days I think a lot about Laravel, TypeScript, where AI fits in a working engineer's toolkit, and how small teams stay small without grinding to a halt. This blog is where I write that thinking down.

Away from code: a supportive wife, a small army of children, a stack of Warhammer minis I'll definitely paint one day, and an unreasonable amount of coffee.

What I'm doing now

  • Leading a small team building a SaaS for dance studios to run their businesses. Turns out 'simple' studio admin isn't simple at all.
  • Reading and tinkering a lot on how to actually get useful work out of AI. Half the battle is figuring out what to stop doing.
  • Working through a small mountain of Lego sets. Adult fan, no apologies.
